Pandemic Planning

The UA Pandemic Response Planning Subgroup, part of the Campus Emergency Response Team, has been working closely with county, state and national agencies to develop appropriate measures to be taken during a potential pandemic influenza outbreak.

Flu season in the United States usually ranges from November through March, and this year health officials are especially concerned because of the threat of a worldwide influenza pandemic possibly developing from the H5N1 strain of bird (avian) flu circulating around the world. Since 2003, the strain has infected 241 people in 10 nations, killing 141, according to the World Health Organization.

Humans have little pre-existing natural immunity to H5N1 infection. Therefore, if these H5N1 viruses gain the ability for efficient and sustained transmission among humans, an influenza pandemic could result, with potentially high rates of illness and death.

The Campus Emergency Response Team, through its Pandemic Response Planning Subgroup, will begin to provide regular updates regarding pandemic response planning activities to the UA Campus community through this Web site.
